Jenkintown Sunset Run & Walk Marks Start of Summer

Hundreds expected for 20th annual event; pre-registration ends June 17.

Jenkintown, Pa. (June 8, 2010) — Runners from the greater Philadelphia region will celebrate the first full day of summer during the running of the 20th annual Jenkintown Sunset Run & Walk on Tuesday, June 22 in Jenkintown. In addition to the certified 5K race, a 1-mile walk and Kids Dash will also be held.

“This is event is a 20-year old tradition that grows richer every year,” says Linda Kligman, Executive Director of the Jenkintown Community Alliance. “The fun and spirit grow, as do the number of racers, activities, community supporters, and proceeds that benefit those in our town.”

The race, whose proceeds benefit both the Kiwanis Club of Jenkintown and the Jenkintown Community Alliance, features two neighborhood routes, both of which start in Jenkintown’s Town Square (Leedom St. and Greenwood Ave.). Each course winds through the streets of the beautiful, tree-lined Montgomery County borough. The 1-mile walk, geared for those who want to participate without running, and the free-to-participate Kids Dash, which is designed for children 5 years-old and under, will preced the event on Town Square.

Check-ins begin at 5:30 p.m. on June 22 with the Kids Dash set for 6:30 p.m., the Run at 7 p.m. and the Walk at 7:15 p.m. An awards ceremony will follow the race with door prizes handed out and refreshments served.

With past participant levels having reached over 300, individual runners, walkers and teams should pre-register through June 17 for a reduced entry fee of $20. Teams of four or five runners cost $75, while kids under 12 are $10. Walk-up registration on race day costs $25 for adults and $15 for children under 12 . No pre-registration is required for the Kids Dash.

All participants receive a custom-designed, commemorative t-shirt while supplies last. Pre-registered participants may pick up registration packets of running bibs and t-shirts at Jenkintown Running Company (416 York Rd., Jenkintown) from Saturday, June 19 to Monday, June 21, 2010.

The top three males and females finishing the 5K route will be awarded a medal and $100, $50 and $25 Jenkintown Gift Certificates, respectively. The top three males and females in each age group will receive medals. Age groups are: 11 & under, 12-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70 and over. Members of the first race team to finish will all receive medals.

This event is made possible through the generous, record-setting sponsorship of Wells Fargo Advisors, Abington Bank, King Design, Steve Spindler Cartography and many community partners.
