The New Metropolis

An advance screening of the two-part documentary The New Metropolis about America’s “first” suburbs, the birthplace of the American Dream will be held on October 8th at the Hiway Theatre. Using compelling, personal stories, The New Metropolis explores the birth of the suburbs 60 years ago, highlights the challenges our older suburbs now face, and points towards solutions for their revitalization. The screening will be followed by a discussion. First Suburbs Project is suggesting a $15 donation accepted at the box office; refreshments will be available for purchase. Classics and Family Fun at the Hiway Theatre

The Hiway Theatre has new Fall programs including Classic Movies (See the original 35 mm print of Thoroughly Modern Millie with Julie Andres on Sept. 30), Movies Moms (and Dads!) Matinees on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the months, and a Children’s Matinee series planned for school holidays which will now feature two showings, including a Sensory Friendly Cinema (SFC) with lights and volume adjusted at the first screening. Exciting things are happening at Jenkintown Java located at 620 Greenwood Avenue. Ernie and Helen Pio, are the new owners and have an introduced a new menu with fresh baked goodies daily. Chef Pio has over 20 years catering experience and operates three other cafes called The Twisted Gourmet throughout Montgomery County. Enjoy their evening hours and live music on Friday nights and mark your calendar for the Jenkintown Java Dance Off on Saturday, August 22nd when you can show off your dance moves and win an iPod.
