SEPTA’s Proposed Bus Route Change Effecting Jenkintown Service
Dear Residents of Chestnut Hill, Springfield Township, Cheltenham Township, Jenkintown Boro, Fox Chase, Rhawnhurst and Upper Northwood:
Please consider submitting comments for the proposed changes to SEPTA’s bus route 77 at the public hearings on June 11 and 12; or by email using their online comment form by June 12. Here is a brief summary of SEPTA’s 77 bus service, the proposed route changes, and details about the public hearing process:
SEPTA’s bus #77 provides service to many shopping districts, educational facilities and places of interest on its route through Wyndmoor, Glenside, Jenkintown, Cheltenham Village between Chestnut Hill (the western terminus) and Northeast Philadelphia, near Roosevelt Mall (the eastern terminus). Riders can take the 77 bus to destinations such as Wyndmoor’s commercial district, Cedarbrook Plaza, Arcadia University, Glenside’s shopping district along Easton Road, the PA College of Optometry, Wyncote/Jenkintown train station, Jenkintown’s town center, McKinley neighborhood, Elkins Park Hospital, Cheltenham Village, Burholme Park and Roosevelt Mall. The ride from Chestnut Hill to Jenkintown is about 25 minutes, and from Jenkintown to Cheltenham Village is about 15 minutes. The cost of a one-way ride, for an adult, is $1.45 (the price of a token) or $2 (full fare, without a token). And even though this bus runs every hour, it is reliable and runs very close to schedule.
SEPTA is proposing service changes for several bus routes including bus #77. The proposed changes for bus route 77( Route 77 As Proposed Feb 2008 (37kb)) will extend the route around Cheltenham Square Mall but will eliminate the ‘loop’ through Jenkintown (a loop that currently goes by the businesses and shopping center on Old York Road, (south of the town center) past Jenkintown’s historic Hiway Theatre, and runs along Greenwood Avenue/Jenkintown Road, past Abington Friends School).
SEPTA wants to hear how people feel about these changes: will they lose current riders or ‘potential’ riders with the changes? You can let them know what you think by either attending their Fiscal Year 2009 Annual Service Plan public hearings on June 11 (10 am in SEPTA’s Board Room, Mezzanine level, 1234 Market Street, Philadelphia) or on June 12 (2 pm at the Church on the Mall inside Plymouth Meeting Mall, near the food court). You may also send your comments by mail or through their online comment form (at the end of the list of proposed changes to their Service Plan) by June 12.
